UEFA Press information:

  • This fascinating tie brings together the two teams that have made it right the way through to the quarter-finals in their first ever UEFA Champions league campaign.  The fact that they have been drawn against each other means, evidently, that one debutant will reach the semi-finals.

  • Deportivo travel to Leeds anxious to remember their first visit to England rather than their second.  They won at Villa park seven seasons ago but were shot down by the Gunners in last season's UEFA cup, losing 5-1 to Arsenal FC at Highbury.

  • Leeds United had never lost to Spanish visitors at Elland road until the Real Madrid game in the second group phase.  Five previous matches had  produced two 2-1 victories and three 1-1 draws.

  • Before FC Barcelona's visit to Elland road during the first group phase, United had gone 26 years without entertaining Spanish opposition.  On that occasion, the visitors were also FC Barcelona - Johna Cruyff and all - and Leeds won 2-1 to secure a place in the 1974-75 final.

  • In the quarter finals, perspectives of extra-time  and penalty shoot-outs kick in.  The Golden Goal rule does not apply in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.  In other words, if a tie goes to extra-time, two full periods of 15 minutes will be played.

  • Remember that, apart from enormous sporting prestige, there are financial rewards for reaching the semi-final stage.  Each of the four qualifiers will receive 5 million Swiss frans.

  • UEFA has increased the starting fee for all 32 participants from 1.5 million to 2.5 million Swiss francs and, during the two group phases, each club has received an appearance fee of 500,000 francs per match, plus performance bonuses of 500,000 Swiss francs for a win and 250,000 for a draw.  In addition, each club keeps gate receipts from its home games and, at the end of the season will receive a share of the TV pool income.

  • So far, Leeds United have earned 16 million Swis francs, including the bonus of 4 million for reaching the quarter-finals.  Deportivo La Coruna have, thus far, netted 16.25 million francs.

  • Walter Pandiani is one of 11 players who have scored five goals, while Alan Smith and Mark Viduka are among the 18 who have scored four.

  • David O'Leary's pre-match press conferance has been arranged for 14:00 on Tuesday in the Jackie Charlton suite at Elland road.

  • Javier Irurtea will hold his press conferance in the same place at 19:45.

  • The Deportivo squad will train on the pitch at 20:00.

  • TVE's live coverage of Deportivo's 1-1 draw in Milan that clinched top spot in their group attracted an audiance of 6 million viewers in Spain - 37.8% of the viewing public.

  • During the 144 games played during the two group phases, 61.81% of the teams that scored the first goal went on to win the game.  Only 14.58% were defeated after opening the scoring.
